Interesting, but maybe disgusting detail: Toothless did readily regurgitate fish for Hiccup, although they were enemies just a few days before. Maybe regurgitating is a common way to share food among Night Furies or even all dragons in the movie? (Yes, me again with my scientific, and a bit nerdy mind xD)

I'll bet it's just a dragon thing of showing thanks. Maybe when they're given food like that they're expected to give something back in return?

It wood be pretty much weird to give part of the food back in return. I rather think Toothless understood that Hiccup had no fish more, then he noticed that Hiccup was quite skinny and gave him part of the fish back so that Hiccup had something to eat. I think it was to share the fish, not to thank Hiccup about it.
